Interviews in Natt&Dag, Studvest & FAN Fanzine

The Nabovarsel magazine we are making has been getting a bit of attention in the press lately, and I’m only too happy to share…

For the new listeners: The nabovarsel magazine is a digital “zine”, which yours truly have been responsible for designing. We are in the process of releasing it to the public right now, and everybody is really excited.

The first interview we had was with Studvest, You can read it in its entirety right here:
Til Bladhyllene!

Then we had a nice chat with Natt&Dag’s Håvard Nyhus, read it here:
Edith PDF: Nabovarsel lanserer fanzine

Then Birgitte Mandelid from FAN Fanzine had a talk, and since they don’t work on the internets, you can read my pretty scan of the pages instead:

More interviews coming up as they appear in the wild!

The Nabovarsel magazine

Today is the day the first edition of the Nabovarsel magazine is released!

We have been working on this thing for about five months now. The bulk of the magazine is made up of some brilliant articles and photos, cooked up by the most brilliant young minds in Bergen, nothing less. Headlining is the biggest, baddest city guide to Berlin you have ever seen, covering ten years of club culture.

We also have gotten rather huge amount of DJs from the whole country to chip in and name their top 10 tracks between 2000 and 2009. Some safe cuts, some suprising ones, lots of great music. Just over fifty pages, it’s a pretty solid piece of work, if I may say so.

If you are unaware of the existence of Nabovarsel, it is a music and culture collective based in Bergen, hosting parties and various other events, managing several artists and bands, and we even have a podcast, featuring mainly  mixtapes from Norway’s best DJs. Branching out, we figured it would be great fun to make a magazine, too.

My role in this project has been in the design department of course, being head designer on the whole rag. Keep reading for some design jibberjabber!

editorial webdesign

I was asked by Emilio, grand master of Nabovarsel, if I wanted to contribute to their forthcoming publication. This gave me the chance to work more on my editorial design skills, so I was happy to oblige!

This project is a bit special though, the entire publication will be distributed strictly digitally, through usb sticks and the web. Thus, the magazine must be optimized for being read on-screen, and potentially printed out by the readers, if that’s their thing. The brilliance about this is that when you’re not bucked down by print costs, you can fill up the magazine with tons of good stuff, and not have to worry about the price.
Future editions will most likely work with the ipad and its similar incarnations, too. We’ll see.

UPOP.no has a case on the magazine, here.

This is some work in progress, for an article page. Click to enlarge.

New Visuals for Nabovarsel

Just finished another Visual for the local it-crowd, aka Nabovarsel. Some pretty simple stuff really, not trying to invent anything new in this one. Both of the Nabovarsel visuals so far has had a bit similar technical concept, as they are made in Adobe after effects, with folding  cutouts as the main premise. So the next one will probably be quite different. Plus, I had just a few hours to finish this, so the product is far from polished. The typography is rediculous, for instance. Oh well.

If you don’t really understand what the vid is of, it’s a Norwegian tradition having advent calenders, inside every date there is a piece of chocolate or similar, to keep you going ’till christmas as a kid. Or adult, in my case.

I have some lofty plans for the live visuals at the main event, as I’m gonna link up a bunch of old CRT monitors to show the same visual at different places in the venue. I’ll probably show some pics if it goes well. In the meantime, you can follow me on the T-bird, too.
